Team Daiwa Fuego Review October 30, 2005 The Team Daiwa Fuego reel has been an excellent addition to my other Daiwa reel "arsenal". All of my reels are left-handed models, and I have three (3) Z and three (3) X-series reels on my Daiwa Light and Tough Rods. However, the Z and X reels were a little too big for my Loomis Crankbait and Spinnerbait rods, so that is why I chose the Fuego for these rods.
The reel seats on the Loomis Crankbait and Spinnerbait rods are not as low a profile as my Daiwa Light and Tough series rods. Because of this, I found the Z and X series reels to cause cramping and difficulty in palming these reels on the Loomis rods after a few hours of use. However, the lower profile of the Fuego makes it a pleasure to use on these Loomis rods and palming the reels is no longer a problem.
The Fuego is a smooth operating reel--with similar free spool, drag and anti-backlash features found on the Z and X series. If you are accustomed to the Z and X series reels, you will find that setup and use is essentially identical with the Fuego. The infinite anti-reverse, heavy gear train, and rigid housing provide top-notch performance. Craftmanship and quality are what you would expect from a top of the line Daiwa reel! It was evident that Daiwa had spent effort in tuning this reel.
Pros: + Lower profile and very light weight construction + Drag and backlash setup is similiar to Z and X series reels. It employs the same excellent tuning, and anti-backlash and drag systems found on Z and X series reels + Comfortable handle and it's easy to increase drag when required + Click settings on coarse and fine backlash controls are very distinct and easy to adjust + It's very easy to cast light weight spinnerbaits, jigs, etc.(1/8 and 1/4 oz) without backlash
Minor Cons (no major cons): - The red finish can scratch easily if care is not exercised. (I always use reel protectors when storing any of my rods in the rod locker.) - The casting bar is located toward the back of the reel. I would have preferred it to be in the front part of the reel to make it easier to use with one hand(less fumbling that way in my opinion) - I found that this reel was 'a little too low profiled' for my Daiwa Light and Tough series rods. (I tried this reel on my favorite 6613, and 7013 rods and found my right hand began to cramp after using it for only a short period of time.) However, this was not a problem on my Loomis rods.
Overall, this is a superb reel.
